What are the routes… where can I get a current map?
There are 13 distinct routes covering campus, including the Park & Ride route, Recreation Center/JRP circulator, and Night Campus Express. If you want to count SafeBus, then there are 16 different routes. Campus Express and Downtown/24th & Ridgecourt are counted as two routes on the map, but are loops covering the same area twice. There are maps all around campus, but you can count on KU Parking & Transit, KU Info (4th floor of the Kansas Union), and inside the buses to always have a supply. Click here for an electronic version of the routes. Daily bus system. Fall/spring routes link.
The main bus routes start at 7 a.m. and end by 6 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Night Campus Express then runs from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday thru Friday. On Fridays and Saturdays SafeBus runs from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.
The best first step is to find where it is you are on the map, and where it is you want to go. Then look for the "bus stop symbol" closest to your starting and ending locations. Those are the stops you want to use initially. The different colored lines represent different routes. The easiest way to travel is to use the fewest number of buses possible. Find the route(s) that take you to your destination and match them up (by color or route number) to the schedule on the opposite side of the map to find timings. Example: I need to be at Wescoe at 11:00 a.m. and live in McCollum. There is a stop at both McCollum and Wescoe, and Route 1 (red) seems to connect them. Route 1 stops at Wescoe at 10:45 a.m. (to give me some time for some last minute reading before class!) which means I have to get on the bus at 10:40a.m. So, I should probably be outside waiting five minutes in advance, but if I miss the bus, oh well! Another one comes at 10:45. But if I wait any longer than that, not good, I'll be sprinting to class.
The red bus symbol on the map represents "official" stops. But! You can get off or get on the bus at safe corners off-campus. Just ask your bus driver to stop at a certain corner next time, or flag the driver down from the corner. It's not a guarantee that all requests will be honored (stopping in the middle of 23rd Street, for instance, is a bad idea) but if it is on the route and is a natural stopping area, you should be able to "create your own stop." However, Park and Ride, SafeBus, and the Rec Center/JRP Circulator (aka Campus Circulator) will ONLY stop at designated stops.
Good question, since Fall 2007 is the first time SafeBus will hit the road. It is designed to strengthen the SafeRide program in taking people home safely. It runs from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and is fully funded by your student fees (a.k.a.- You don't need to pay to get on!) Don't forget your KUID though, you'll need it to get on the bus!
All buses are free to ride with a KUID. Park and Ride is fare-free without a KUID.
Will the bus stop anywhere or just designated stops?
Not exactly "anywhere" but definitely more than just designated stops. See "Where is my stop?" Park and Ride, SafeBus, and the Rec Center/ JRP Circulator will only stop at designated stops.
No, that was tried in the past and was disastrous. The Park & Ride lot has bike racks, however, and then you can shuttle on to campus for free.
Yes. Just show your KUID. (Actually you pay a small SafeRide fee every semester to fund the system, which is why you should take advantage of it!)
Call 785-864-SAFE (7233) when you need a ride. The dispatcher will send out cars in the order your call is received, but sorry, no reservations can be made in advance!
To your residence within Lawrence city limits.
Yes. No ifs, ands, or buts about it!
Why won't SafeRide take me to the party?
SafeRide is a "safe" transportation system, and although we can't get you to the party, we are happy to bring you back home afterward!
No.
How many cars run on each night?
Sunday and Monday- 2
Tuesday- 3
Wednesday- 4
Thursday- 5
Friday and Saturday- 7
During the summer, SafeRide operates 3 vehicles per night and runs Thursday-Saturday.
How many rides does SafeRide give?
Please click here for SafeRide statistics.
Per Semester: Running the bus system- $16 Having air-conditioned, ADA-compliant, top-exhaust buses- $20 SafeRide 7 days a week- $6 Three SafeBus routes- $4 Not having to drive/walk to campus in the rain and snow- Priceless
Why do I still have to buy a bus pass?
Right now you have to buy a bus pass, sorry, because there is not enough money to fund the system without the revenue from bus pass sales. However, in the future we really want to have unlimited access for all KU students, for a $15-$20 semester fee… so you might be voting on that soon!
